ConvertKit Review – Pros And Cons For 2024

Welcome to our ConvertKit review

ConvertKit is a creator marketing platform that can help you to grow and monetize your audience. It’s our top recommended email marketing platform for bloggers and content creators.

But is it worth the hype?

In this article, we’ll take a detailed look at what ConvertKit has to offer, from features to pricing to help you decide whether it’s the right email marketing solution for your needs.

What is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit is an email marketing tool that has been created with the needs of independent creators in mind.

ConvertKit Homepage

It has all the functionality of a regular email marketing tool, such as a form builder, email newsletter designer, automations, segmentation options, and more. But it also has some extra features packed in too.

For example, the platform offers some extremely useful commerce features, an intuitive landing page builder, and a unique sponsor network that make it the perfect option for creators looking to earn a living online.

Now you know a little about what ConvertKit is, let’s jump into a more detailed review of its features.

What features do ConvertKit offer?

ConvertKit offers all the features creators need to grow their lists, send emails, and monetize their audience. That includes:

  • Landing pages & forms
  • Email designer & templates
  • Email marketing tools
  • Email marketing automation tools
  • Subscriber management
  • Commerce features

Next, we’ll give you a first-hand look at all of these features and how to use them.

Landing page builder

When you first sign up for ConvertKit, you’ll be greeted by a quick setup wizard, and then brought to your ConvertKit dashboard.

From here, you’ll be able to access all of ConvertKit’s many tools.

Under the Grow menu, click Landing Pages & Forms to start gathering subscribers.

01 Landing page builder

From here, you can create hosted landing pages and opt-in forms to collect newsletter subscribers.

ConvertKit offers a pretty extensive landing page template library, with pre-made templates for all sorts of campaigns.

02 Premade templates

For example, there are templates for event pages, newsletter sign-up pages, webinar enrollment pages, wait list pages, and more.

The quality varies but generally speaking, they’re pretty well-designed. And they’re all fully customizable and mobile responsive.

Once you’ve chosen a template, click Choose to open it up in the page editor.

03 Choose a template

Covertkit’s editor is pretty similar to other page editors. It’s easy to use, with a large WYSIWYG preview window and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

But to be honest, it does feel a little boxed in. There are only a limited number of blocks to choose from for things like lists, headings, paragraphs, images, videos, countdown timers—all the usual stuff, but nothing particularly interesting.

And you can’t move elements around the page freely. Everything is locked into place within containers. So you can only add/delete blocks and tweak the content, colors, and design.

Having said all that, the simplicity and lack of options keeps things simple so beginners should find it easier to work with compared to many other more sophisticated page builders, which is probably a good thing for ConvertKit’s target market of independent creators.

Once you’ve finished creating your page, click Publish.

04 Share your landing page

You can then share your hosted page URL on social in a couple of clicks, or embed the page on your existing site via the ConvertKit WordPress plugin.

Form builder

Aside from landing pages, you can also create opt-in forms to embed on your website or landing pages. Just click Grow > Landing Pages & Forms > + Create new > Form to get started.

There are four display formats to choose from: Inline, modal, slide-in, and sticky bar.

05 Display format of form

As with landing pages, there are a bunch of templates for different types of forms to choose from, and you can customize them all in the same drag-and-drop editor interface.

Email marketing

Once you have a list, you can use ConvertKit to send emails to your subscribers.

To get started, open the Send menu and select the type of email you want to send.

06 Send menu

You can choose between Broadcasts (one-time emails sent to all subscribers or specific segments), and Sequences (automatic email flows triggered by actions, such as welcome sequences).

You can also create your own custom Email Templates and reusable Snippets (blocks of contents) to use again and again in your campaigns.

ConvertKit’s newsletter templates are great—much better than their landing page templates. And again, they’re all fully customizable in an intuitive email editor.

07 Newsletter templates

The email designer itself has some neat features like one-click subject line A/B testing.

08 One click subject AB testing

But as with the landing page editor, it does feel a little basic and boxed in. That said, beginner users will appreciate the simplicity.

Once you’ve created your broadcasts, you can choose who to send them to, using Filters to create targeted campaigns.

Automations

ConvertKit has one of the most intuitive, beginner-friendly automation toolkits we’ve seen.

To get started with automations, click the Automate menu. From here, you can quickly set up automatic RSS feeds, create automation rules, or build visual automation workflows/funnels.

09 Automate menu

Rules are super easy to work with. It’s as simple as ‘if this, then that’. Just tell Convertkit what you want you’d like it to do (i.e. the Action) and when (i.e. the Trigger).

For example, you might create a rule wherein after a user clicks a link, a tag is automatically added to their account for easier targeting.

The Visual Automations tool is a little more difficult to grasp, but much more powerful once you get the hang of it. You can create complex paths based on actions, events, and conditions.

10 Visual automations

Despite its complexity, it’s still much easier to use than other competitor workflow builders. And there’s even a bunch of pre-built automation templates you can start from to make your life easier.

Commerce

In addition to email marketing solutions, ConvertKit also offers a bunch of commerce features that make it easy for creators to sell digital products.

From the Earn menu, you can create new Products and set up payments so you can start selling them online through your landing pages and emails.

11 Earn menu

And that’s not all. If you don’t have anything to sell, you can still monetize your audience through donations using ConvertKit’s Tip Jars feature.

It only takes a few minutes to set up. And once you’re done, you can invite your subscribers and page visitors to support you as a creator to start earning money.

There are also some more advanced funnel management tools, such as the ability to embed buy now buttons in your email, and the option to exclude previous buyers from your email campaigns.

In addition to all the commerce features, ConvertKit also supports a range of payment models making it perfect for any type of digital business. You can charge your customers for one-time payments, payment plans, or subscriptions and you can even add a pay-what-you-want option.

Overall, the commerce features are what make ConvertKit a great choice for creators, as you have tons of options for monetizing your email list.

Sponsor network

ConvertKit’s sponsor network offers a unique way for creators to make more money from their newsletters.

The company helps creators source and manage premium sponsorships, and automatically places ads in their newsletters. The Sponsor network is part of ConvertKit’s offerings but you have to apply to a part of the program.

Although ConvertKit takes a total of 23.5% of the sponsorship earnings, it’s still a great way to make the most out of your email marketing campaigns and increase your earnings.

Integrations

ConvertKit comes with a long list of optional integrations, and almost all of the major marketing and ecommerce tools are included.

Some of the integration categories include lead capture, membership and courses, webinar services, and Facebook ads, which are all great options for creators. Some of the most notable integrations are:

  • Teachable
  • Shopify
  • Squarespace
  • Memberpress
  • Gleam
  • Stripe
  • WooCommerce
  • SamCart
  • Payhip

You can also access hundreds more integrations by using Zapier. Overall, the integrations available on ConvertKit are really extensive, so it would be easy to create a creator tool stack that could help you supercharge your email marketing strategy.

Resources and support

ConvertKit is preloaded with tons of great resources that can help you get the most out of the platform. First, they have the Tradecraft guides, which are how-to guides to help you learn how to earn online.

There’s also I Am A Creator, a collection of inspiring stories of creator success using the ConvertKit platform as well as Creator Sessions that showcase creator success stories in video form.

You can also access training and podcasts specifically designed to help users get to grips with ConvertKit and all of its functions.

When it comes to support, there are some pretty great options too. You can get support from other users on the Community forum, by simply clicking Community in the resources drop-down on the homepage.

You can also get help from a Certified ConvertKit expert. These experts are listed on the website and are available to hire if you’d like a helping hand getting migrated to the platform.

Creator plan users can also access support from the ConvertKit team via email or chat, whereas Creator Pro plan users get priority email and chat support. All paid plans also include free migration from another tool.

How much does ConvertKit cost?

ConvertKit offers 3 different pricing plans; Free, Creator, and Creator Pro. With the paid plans, the price increases based on the number of email subscribers you have.

12 ConvertKit pricing

The Free plan is good for up to 1000 subscribers, and it’s a great option for building an initial list before making an investment.

The Free plan includes all the necessary features including unlimited landing page and form creation, unlimited broadcasts, audience tagging and segmentation, digital product and subscription features, and community support. The main drawback of the free plan is that it lacks automation functionality.

The Creator plan starts from $9/month for up to 300 subscribers. Like the free plan, the Creator plan allows you to create unlimited landing pages and forms, unlimited broadcasts and has audience tagging and segmentation options.

It gives you access to automation features, the visual automation builder, and digital subscription and selling tools.

By investing in the Creator plan you will also have access to live chat and email support. Switching to the creator plan from another tool is also very simple, as the plan includes free migration. It also includes tons of third-party integration options and one additional member.

The Creator Pro plan starts from $25/month for up to 300 subscribers. It includes everything included in the Creator plan, plus some additional features that would be good for larger businesses.

For example, the plan includes unlimited team member access, which is perfect if you have a team running your email marketing operations. It also includes an advanced reporting feature that isn’t included in other plans, which is perfect for agencies.

Additionally, the Creator Pro plan includes a newsletter referral system and subscriber scoring.

ConvertKit pros and cons

So now we’ve taken a deep dive into the tool, its features, and its pricing, here’s a quick look at what we really really liked, and what we didn’t like so much about ConvertKit.

ConvertKit pros

  • Great for independent content creators. Many email marketing tools are aimed at larger businesses, but ConvertKit is the exception. Everything from the pricing plans to the ConvertKit sponsor network is set up with content creators in mind.
  • Easy-to-use automation builder. Creating automation workflows can be daunting if you’ve never done it before, but not with ConvertKit. The automation builder is extremely easy to use. You can create new workflows, or edit old ones with just a few clicks.
  • Good entry-level tool. Something I noticed when reviewing the tool is that it’s extremely easy to use and very intuitive. Even if you’re a complete email marketing newbie, you’re sure to be able to find your way around and use all the functions of the tool.
  • Easy to integrate with other tools. ConvertKit has tons of great integration options, and the integrations are easy to set-up. Whether you want to integrate ad management tools or an ecommerce tool, you’re sure to find the tool you want on the integrations list.
  • Great email deliverability. This is essential for any email marketing platform. ConvertKit does a great job at getting emails to where they need to go.

ConvertKit cons

  • Not great for large businesses. ConvertKit is more aimed at creators than it is big businesses. Therefore, features and pricing plans aren’t very inclusive of larger-scale operations.
  • Email editor could be improved. Although the ConvertKit email editor is quite easy to navigate, it’s quite basic. It would be better if it had more functionality and customization options.
