Moosend Review 2024 – How Good Is This Email Marketing Platform?

Welcome to our Moosend review.

Moosend is one of the best email marketing automation platforms on the market right now. It offers a solid feature set at an affordable price point and unlimited emails on all plans.

In this in-depth review, we’ll be taking a closer look at everything Moosend has to offer and evaluating all of its key features.

We’ll give you a first-hand look at how the platform works and share our take on its biggest pros and cons.

Plus, we’ll also explain how pricing works and recommend some Moosend alternatives in case you don’t think it’s the right fit for your business.

What is Moosend?

Moosend is a cloud-based email marketing platform with automation capabilities.

Moosend Homepage

You can use it to create newsletters, set up automations, and manage your entire email marketing campaigns end-to-end.

It claims to be the easiest email marketing and automation software solution out there.

But despite its focus on simplicity and ease of use, it’s nonetheless jam-packed with some cutting-edge features that put it a step ahead of its competitors.

AI-powered optimization recommendations, a sophisticated workflow builder, and advanced ‘hyper-personalization’ are just some of the features that set Moosend apart.

Aside from the core email and automation builders, Moosend also comes with some additional tools to help with other aspects of your campaign.

That includes landing pages and subscription forms to help you build your list, CRM tools to help you manage your audience, and reporting and analytics so you can track your email campaign performance with ease.

What features does Moosend offer?

Moosend offers a lot of features out of the box, including:

  • Drag and drop newsletter editor
  • Landing pages and forms
  • Campaign builder
  • Automations (workflow builder)
  • List management and segmentation
  • Analytics and reporting
  • Personalization tools
  • Website tracking and integrations

In the next section of this Moosend review, we’ll take a closer look at some of these key features to give you a first-hand look at how everything works.

Note: Certain features we discuss here may only be included in specific plans. See the pricing section of this review or visit the Moosend website for a breakdown of what’s included in each plan.

Campaigns

You can use Moosend to create an email campaign in as little as 5 mins. To get started, click the + icon in the top navigation bar and then select New Campaign

01 Create new campaign

On the next window, select Regular to send a one-off broadcast or newsletter.

You’ll then be prompted to fill out some basic details like the email subject line and preview text.

02 Set basic settings

What’s cool is that both of the above can be personalized for your recipient with Personalization Tags.  For example, you could address the email to the recipient’s name or company. This can help boost open rates.

Once you’ve done that, click Next and you’ll be able to choose the email list that you want to send your campaign to. We’ll talk more about how to manage your list and create segments later.

After that, it’s time to design the email content itself, which brings us to the next feature…

Templates

When creating your emails with Moosend, you can start from scratch, import a campaign template, or choose one of Moosend’s professionally-designed, responsive templates to get started fast.

03 Template library

There are tons of options in the template library to choose from, spanning a wide range of niches and campaign types.

For example, there are email templates for fitness brands, fashion retailers, hotels, etc. And you’ll also find templates for website launches, Black Friday sales, offers/discounts, etc.

There are even automated templates for different kinds of cart abandonment emails.

Once you’ve selected a template, click Use template to open up the drag-and-drop editor, where you can customize it.

Drag & drop editor

Moosend’s drag-and-drop email builder is the best of any platform we’ve tried, at least as far as ease of use is concerned.

Here’s what it looks like:

04 Drag and drop editor

In the center of the screen, you have a live email preview, where you can see exactly what the newsletter you’re building looks like on both desktop and mobile (toggle the view by clicking the icons at the top).

You can drag and drop elements in the preview window to rearrange your email and move things around. You can also click on any item to customize the content or design.

In the left-hand sidebar, you’ll see three tabs: Layouts, Items, and Settings.

Layouts are grids that you can drag onto your email to control the structure. For example, if you want a section of the email to feature a full-width image, drag the full-width container on. Or if you want a 4×1/4 table, you can drag that container in instead.

Inside each section of your layout grid, you can add an item. Items are essentially blocks or widgets, and there are around a dozen to choose from.

There are Items for images, text, buttons, timers, social share icons, videos, etc. For videos, you’ll have to paste a YouTube, Vimeo, or other URL in as Moosend doesn’t offer native video hosting.

But the most interesting Item of all is the Product block.

05 Product block

Once you add it to your newsletters, Moosend will automatically pick out recommended products from your store to create shoppable emails that convert like crazy.

You can choose what kind of products to recommend in the settings. The default option recommends the top-performing products in your store based on the number of orders. But you can also recommend products based on revenue or views—or even by AI.

If you choose the AI option, Moosend will provide a personalized recommendation for each recipient based on their interaction with products on your site. Cool, huh?

Before we move on, one last point to mention about the drag-and-drop editor is Comments mode—a really cool collaboration tool that’s ideal for agencies.

06 Comments mode

You can switch to Comments mode by clicking the tab at the top. Once you’re in this mode, you can hover your mouse over any item on the newsletter and add a comment. In the comment, you can tag your team members by entering @ and choosing their usernames.

This comes in useful if you want to, for example, give feedback to your team or delegate editing tasks. They can also reply to the comment chain through the editor.

Automatic resends

Once you’ve finished designing your email, the last step to finalize your campaign is set your delivery options.

07 Schedule delivery

You can choose to send the email straight away or schedule it in advance for a specific time.

But what’s really cool is that you also have the option of toggling Resend campaign to non-openers on.

Once you do that, Moosend will automatically resend your email to recipients who don’t open the first one. You can choose how many hours, days, or months to wait before resending. And you can change the subject line for the resends so it looks like a completely new email.

This feature can help you to maximize your open rates and, ultimately, improve your campaign performance.

A/B testing

Moosend also allows you to split test emails to see which one performs best. To set up an a/b test, navigate to Campaigns > New > A/B campaign. Or alternatively, click the three dots next to an existing campaign and then select convert to AB

The process of creating an a/b test is the same as setting up a regular campaign, except you’ll write two email subject lines instead of one.

Then, you’ll choose what percentage of subscribers to send each test variation to.

08 Set AB settings

For example, you could set it up so that 10% of your list receive emails with subject line A, 10% receive emails with subject line B, and the other 80% receive emails with whichever subject line wins.

You can also set how long you want to run the test before switching to the winning version (1 – 24 hours) and choose what metric you want to use to select a winning variation: opens or clicks.

RSS & repeatable emails

You can also set up RSS & repeatable emails through the Campaigns tool.

09 RSS feed URL

Once you set up an RSS campaign, Moosend will automatically pull your latest posts from an RSS feed URL and regularly send out emails featuring them to your subscribers.

This is great for bloggers who want an easy, low-effort way to automate their email marketing efforts.

Repeatable emails work pretty much the same way, except instead of entering an RSS feed, you’ll provide a content URL.

Website tracking

Moosend can track user behavior on your website to know what products they’ve viewed, what they’ve purchased, added to their cart, etc. You can then feed that data back into your email marketing campaigns.

In order to utilize website tracking, you’ll first need to connect Moosend to your site, which you can do via plugins or by copy-pasting a code snippet.

Click your profile icon and then Websites to get started. Then, click Add website > Install connection script.

10 Connect your website

Here, you’ll find native plugins for WooCommerce, OpenCart, ZenCart, Segment, CS-Cart, and Magento. You can install and activate them on your site in a couple of clicks.

Automations

Another one of Moosend’s core features is Automations, which you can access from the top navigation bar.

Here, you can build your own email marketing automation workflows from scratch to create sophisticated automated campaigns, or get started quickly with Moosend’s Automation Recipes.

11 Automation recipes

Recipes are essentially pre-built workflows for popular automations, like abandoned cart emails, Happy Birthday emails, loyalty sequences, onboarding sequences, etc.

There are even weather-based upsell/cross-sell recipes, which send first-time customers weather-based product recommendations following their initial purchase.

For example, if the forecast in their location says rain, Moosend might recommend umbrellas or raincoats. If it’s sunny, it might recommend swimwear, hats, or sun lotion. You get the idea.

If you choose to build your own workflow from scratch, you can choose from over 100+ triggers and connect them up to conditional/control steps and actions on a visual flowchart in order to create super complex campaigns.

Landing pages

Aside from email marketing and automation, you can also use Moosend to build landing pages and subscription forms.

To create your first page, navigate to Growth Tools > Landing Pages > New.

Next, set up your basic settings by entering a name for the page, the page title, meta description, favicon, etc.

After that, you’ll be taken to the landing page Template Library

13 Landing pages template library

There’s a good variety of landing page templates to choose from including templates for ebooks, lead generation, webinars, announcements, etc.

There are even templates for specific niches, like restaurants, music stores, apps, etc.

Choose a template you like the look of or just click Create from scratch to head to the landing page builder.

14 Create from scratch

The page builder interface is more or less identical to the email editor. So again, it’s super easy to use.

Just drag and drop Layouts and Items in from the left and customize them in the WYSIWYG preview window.

Finally, to finish creating your landing page, you can set up conversion tracking and choose your publishing method.

If you don’t have your own site, you can publish your landing page to a Moosend subdomain for free and copy the URL. Alternatively, you can publish it directly to your existing WordPress site from the Moosend connector plugin.

Subscription forms

In addition to landing pages, you can also create email opt-in forms to help build your list.

Click Growth Tools > New > Subscription Form to get started.

15 Choose subscription form type

There are six form types to choose from: Pop-ups, inline forms, floating bars, floating boxes, fullscreen forms, and promotional pop-ups.

As with landing pages, you can start by selecting a template from Moosend’s form template library, and then customize it in the drag-and-drop editor.

There are also a bunch of useful advanced features like custom display rules, anti-bot protection, gamification, etc.

Subject line tester

Aside from the core software, Moosend also offers a free browser tool, called Refine, that can help you to create the best email subject lines possible.

16 Refine free subject line tester

All you have to do is enter a subject line and Refine will use AI to predict your open and click rates, and benchmark them against your industry’s average. So you’ll know whether you’ll be performing on-, below-, or above average.

It’ll also offer custom suggestions on how you can improve. So for example, it might tell you to add your brand name to the subject line or to add personalized fields.

List management

Moosend offers a built-in CRM where you can manage all your subscribers and view them in one place. You can access it by clicking Audience in the top navigation bar.

17 Audience tab

Here, you can do things like create email lists, add new members, bulk import subscribers, create new custom fields, etc. And you can also view basic audience analytics like active subscriber numbers, unsubscribed %, avg bounced %, etc.

You can also click Audience > Segments > Create new to create custom segments, which you can then target individually in your campaigns.

There are pre-made segment templates that you can roll out in one click. These templates automatically sort through your list and categorize subscribers into different segments based on pre-set rules.

For example, there are templates for double opt-in verified members, members who’ve purchased a product x times in the last 30 days, subscribers who haven’t opened campaign emails within the last 30 days, etc.

You can also automate your subscriber management tasks and build CRM workflows using the workflow builder, which we looked at earlier.

For example, you could create a workflow where a customer fills out a review form and if the score given is above 8, then a tag ‘positive review’ is added to their account in your Moosend CRM.

Analytics and reports

Moosend provides some analytics insights on each page of the dashboard. For example, if you click on Campaigns > Regular you will see key analytics like your average open, clickthrough, and unsubscribe rates.

You can also view audience insights like active subscribers and bounce rate by clicking Audience > Email lists.

To compile all of your analytics into a report, simply click on the Reports tab on the navigation bar. You can then choose to create campaign reports or custom reports.

18 Reports tab

Using the custom reports tool, you can manually select widgets to add to the report. You can then choose to export the reports in CSV format or PDF format once they’re complete.

Integrations

Moosend integrates with a good selection of 3rd party tools that you can use to make the most out of the software. Some of the most notable integrations are:

  • WordPress
  • Salesforce
  • Zapier
  • Google Contacts
  • Segment

To connect your chosen tools, all you have to do is navigate to the Integrations page which can be found on the profile dropdown menu in the top right of the dashboard. Then, choose the tool you want to connect and click Select.

19 Moosend integrations

You’ll then be redirected to the website of your chosen tool and prompted to log in to your account to complete the integration.

How much does Moosend cost?

Moosend prices depend on the number of subscribers in your list, and all plans include unlimited emails. This makes it a very economical solution if you send a lot of emails but have a relatively small list.

There are three plans to choose from: the Free Trial plan, the Pro plan, and the Enterprise plan.

The Free Trial plan only lets you have a maximum of 1,000 subscribers and lasts for 30 days, but you can sign up with no credit card required. So it’s a great way to try the platform out risk-free before you buy.

The Free plan includes all the core email marketing features. But you won’t be able to set up transactional emails or build landing pages. And you’ll be limited to just 1 custom report and 1 user.

The Pro plan starts from $9 per month, but prices increase depending on how many subscribers you have. At 10,000 subscribers, you’ll pay $88 per month.

The Pro plan includes everything you get with the free trial, plus landing pages, transactional emails, SMTP server, and 5 team members.

The Enterprise plan is designed for larger businesses with a ton of subscribers and additional needs. You’ll need to get in touch with Moosend for a custom quote.

Enterprise customers get all the Pro features plus a dedicated account manager, priority support, 10+ team members, premium campaign performance, deliverability and strategy optimization, and full access to custom reporting.

If you don’t want to lock yourself into a monthly subscription plan, you can also take advantage of Moosend’s pay-as-you-go option instead. This a good option for occasional senders who want more control and freedom

If you go down that route, you’ll pay for credits, which you use to send emails. 350,000 email credits cost $420, but you can pay for as much or as little as you want.

Moosend pros and cons

Now that we’ve had a chance to explore the features, here’s an overview of what I think Moosend’s biggest pros and cons are:

Moosend pros

  • Excellent value for money. One of the best things about Moosend is the value for money it offers. Both the paid plans and pay-as-you-go rates are substantially more affordable than many of its competitors, especially if you have a smaller list. But despite the price, it still offers a great set of features.
  • Ease of use. Moosend lives up to its marketing slogan when it comes to ease of use. It definitely is one of the most easy-to-use email marketing tools around. In particular, the drag-and-drop editor is super simple. And pre-built templates make creating newsletters, landing pages, and automations a breeze.
  • Great deliverability. Moosend has one of the best delivery rates of any platform we’ve tried. So more of your emails are likely to make it to your user’s inboxes and avoid the spam folder.
  • Next-level personalization. Another great thing about Moosend is the level of personalization it allows for. You can get really granular with your targeting and personalize your email subject lines, product recommendations, and more. The AI-powered product recommendation engine is especially good.

Moosend cons

  • No ‘free forever’ plan. Unfortunately, Moosend doesn’t offer a completely free plan. The free trial only lasts for 30 days, so it’s not a good long-term solution if you don’t want to pay for your email marketing software.
  • Subscriber-based pricing. This can be a pro or a con depending on the size of your list. For businesses with very small lists who send out a lot of emails, Moosend is great value for money. But if you have a large list but only send out a few email campaigns per year, it might not be the most economical choice.
  • No website builder. Moosend comes with a solid landing page builder and form builder, but it doesn’t yet have a complete website builder, so it’s not an all-in-one solution. That said, if you already have an existing site, it’s ideal.

Moosend alternatives

Want to explore some of your other options? Here are our favorite Moosend alternatives:

  • Drip | Our review — A powerful email marketing platform geared towards ecommerce businesses. Also includes SMS marketing tools.
  • MailerLite | Our review — Another affordable email marketing software provider. Like Moosend, it offers excellent value for money. And it also includes a full-blown website builder. It has a free plan that supports up to 1,000 email subscribers and includes most features you’ll need.
  • ActiveCampaign | Our review — One of the most advanced email marketing and automation solutions on the market. Includes all the features you need to automate customer experiences.

Final thoughts on Moosend

That concludes our Moosend review.

Overall, I was really impressed by Moosend.

Given how affordable it is, my expectations weren’t super high, to begin with. But after trying it out, I was surprised at how much you get for your money.

I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best email marketing platform on the market right now.. And it gets top marks right across the board: Ease of use, features, affordability, and deliverability are all top-notch.

There are also a lot of advanced features that you get with Moosend that are tough to find elsewhere, like AI-powered suggestions and sophisticated personalization options.

And the templates are great too. There are tons of well-made newsletter templates, landing page templates, and even pre-made automation recipes.

There’s not a whole lot to dislike. But if I had to nitpick, I’d say the lack of a ‘free forever’ plan is a bit of a bummer.

And the fact that it’s missing a fully-functional website builder might put off users that are looking for an all-in-one solution to power their whole online presence.

But, if you already have a website, you’ll probably appreciate the fact that Moosend isn’t bloated with unnecessary features that you don’t need.

Still not sure if it’s the right choice for you? Click the button below to try it out for yourself risk-free and see if it’s a good fit (no credit card required).
